In a recent case heard by the Court of Appeal on 3 November 2011, seventy two year old Mr Taylor, who had been given a cheque for £61,000 by his live in partner of 15 years, Doris Luker, weeks before Mrs Luker died, was ordered to give the money back after a claim was brought by the executors of Mrs Luker’s Estate.

The Sunday Telegraph reports that the MHRA (Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency) is considering new advice for patients fitted with metal on metal hip replacements due to concerns that the devices could cause systemic toxicity. The Supreme Court handed down its judgment for the case of Kernott v Jones in early November 2011. The brief facts of the case are that Mr Kernott and Miss Jones met in 1981 and in 1985 they jointly purchased a house as joint tenants with both parties contributing to the purchase price. The relationship deteriorated in 1993 and Mr Kernott moved out and bought a property elsewhere whilst Miss Jones continued to live in the former couple’s home paying all the expenses including the mortgage.

From January 2012, the maximum compensation which the Financial Ombudsman Service (“FOS”) can award has increased from £100,000 to £150,000. The FOS deals with complaints mainly by consumers about a wide range of financial services including banking, insurance, mortgages, loans, investments and financial advice. The FOS offers a cost effective and less formal means of seeking compensation where you feel that a financial services provider has not treated you fairly and/or given poor advice.

Parents in Northamptonshire may recently have been worried by receiving an email from the County Council notifying them that a place had apparently failed to gain a place at Secondary School for September.
